Murderer In The Attic

September 6, 2013A Story About A Time You Were Very Afraid

When I was in my late teens and early twenties I used to house sit for my Aunt and Uncle when they would travel.  I LOVED it!  They have a beautiful town house right next to the college I was attending at the time and I always thought it was so neat to be so close to school and on my own, even if it was only for a week or two at a time.

When I was 21 I was housesitting for them in the Fall.  Aaron and I had started dating that year and I had invited him over to have dinner.  We made lasagna, watched a movie and then he headed home.  I went upstairs to take a shower and then laid down to go to bed and nearly peed my pant.  The light in the attic was on.  In all of the years I have house sat for my Aunt and Uncle this light has NEVER been on.

Naturally my mind jumped to the first logical thought; there's a murderer in the attic waiting for me to go to sleep so they can sneak down and kill me.  I texted Aaron trying to explain what was going on and asked him to come back to the house.  I couldn't call him because then the murderer in the attic would hear that I knew they were hiding and then they'd just jump down and kill me on the spot.

After I knew Aaron was on his way back over I snuck downstairs and took the biggest knife I could find out of the kitchen to hold incase I had to defend myself.  When Aaron arrived I opened the door with said knife in hand and the first words out of his mouth were, "Katie, please put the knife down."

Well, it turns out the light switch to the attic is actually in the guest room, not in the attic itself.  I had been in that room earlier in the evening to clean the cat box and must have flipped the switch by mistake!  I was so relieved no one was waiting in the attic to chop me to pieces but to this day that was the scariest night of my life!

  3. Haha! Sometimes it takes very little to send our imagination into overdrive. At least you got a good, funny story out of the scare ;)
