Blogtember: Where I'm From

Well hello, welcome back from the long weekend.  My weekend was incredibly relaxing and the thunderstorm we had on Monday afternoon was just a bonus! I hope yours was great too!

This month Jenni from Story of My Life is hosting Blogtember, a blogger challenge.  The idea is to blog 20 out of the 30 days in September, with a different prompt assigned to each day.  Challenge accepted!  I plan on continuing with the Meal Plan Monday posts and High Five for Friday's in addition to the Blogtember posts so prep yourselves for a ridiculous amount of babbling.

September 3, 2013

Describe where of what you come from.  The people, the places, and/or the factors what make up who you are.

I come from an incredibly small town.  Like Mayberry but we live in color and we have Sheriffs but they certainly are not Andy Griffith.  I graduated from High School with every friend I made in Pre-School.  There are fields of cows, no stop lights and one central area that houses the "store", gas station and Post Office.  Where I came from, everyone knew everyone.  Literally.  Normally this was a good thing unless, you drove some kid home from a party you told your parents you weren't going to and then their mom told your mom to thank you for driving their kid home.  Oy!  All of the kids in our community really were raised by the entire "village" to some extent.

I grew up in a bigger family with two older brothers and a younger sister.  Our parents taught us about work ethic, the value of a dollar and determination from a very young age.  I've technically worked continually since I was 13 or so and started out as a babysitter. The values my parents and family instilled in me lead me to becoming a bank Service Manager at 20, being the first in my family to earn a college degree and owning/remodeling/maintaing a home with my fiance at 23.  My family has demonstrated why weathering through life's storms is worth it and how hard work always pays off.

Then there's my Grandparents.  I never really saw my Mom's parents together that I can remember, since her father passed away when I was 2 1/2, but I know from stories and from photos that they loved each other dearly.  I am fortunate enough to still have my Father's parents in my life, who just celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary.  To me, my Grandparents are a prime example of how a marriage should be, full of unconditional love, support and faith.  I think their marriage stands out the most to me because at 93 and 96, I know they still love each other as much as they did when they married in their twenties, if not more.  Since no one else in my family is that old yet, I'll let my grandparents set the bar.

And that my friends, is where and who I came from.

  1. Thanks for sharing all this! I wish my family had taught me more about money - making it and handling it ; ) I moved around a lot when I was younger, so I always think it's cool when someone has lived in the same place their whole lives, and is still friends with people they were friends with when they were young!

  2. Your hometown sounds exactly like my husband's, which is where we live now. Except of course, we do have one, but just one, stoplight :) There seems to be something about small towns, and the families that live in them, that foster a strong work ethic. I love that your grandparents have been married for so long! What a wonderful example of love and devotion!

    1. Hi Allison,

Growing up I always said I was going to move away from my small town and into the city. I tried it for awhile but my fiance and I ended purchasing our home just one town over from my hometown and within walking distance of both my brothers. There's just something about the communities in small towns that is hard to find anywhere else!

  4. You're hometown sounds so much like mine! I went to college 6 hours away because I wanted to live somewhere where no one knew my name or family history just by looking at me. I now have grown up and have a new appreciation for my little town.

    1. Hi Shannon!

It does sound like our home towns are very similar and what is even more of a coincidence is that my Dad's family is from Des Moines, IA! Some of his relatives still live there but my grandparents sold their farm and moved to California when my Dad was a toddler so I've never visited. Thank you for visiting the blog!
